CEO’s Message
Dear reader,
Global warming is undeniably a threat to our planet and if nothing is done, we will relinquish our utmost duty to leave a positive environmental legacy to future generations. With this in mind, we really started our environmental protection journey in 2008 when we moved to a new manufacturing location in Mauritius whereby we engineered the production set up in such a way that we will continuously make our production more sustainable. For instance, we were one of the first companies in the country to install solar water heaters in order to produce renewable energies for our facility.
Since then, we have been working hard to make our textile manufacturing more sustainable so that we reduce significantly CO2 emissions in the next decade to achieve the 1.5°C climate goal to which the global textile and apparel industry has committed to reach by 2050. It is to be noted that this sustainability goal also supports the Paris Agreement in limiting the rise in climate temperature to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
In line with this long-term environmental goal to reduce carbon footprint, “we change the image of textile” has been our bold vision and driving force because we believe in an environmentally responsible approach that will surely make a difference in the way we work in the textile industry for the sake of creating a more sustainable business model, thus safeguarding the future of the planet. Aligned with our vision, our Mission 2025 is focused on the realisation of our challenging business goals while simultaneously developing a sustainable business model that will minimise environmental impacts. That is why our business strategy and management approach, anchored in people and innovation to create high performance teams, continuously enhance productivity and scale our capacity, is aligned to our environmental strategy which encompasses 4 crucial components namely:
- Committed to environmental sustainability through a policy endorsed by everyone at RT Knits.
- Adopted a structured approach, RT EMS: Environmental management system to identify, track and manage our impacts.
- Identified priority areas and set up a team of dedicated persons to manage and help departments to mitigate impacts.
- Set up long term environmental targets which motivate us for continual improvement.
A strategy deprived of clear targets and yardsticks is the best recipe to lack focus and to miss the targets. To avoid this trap, we have set environmental targets to translate our sustainability ambitions into concrete actions. Besides, it is worth pointing out that we are the first textile company in Africa to have committed to science-based targets, and we are committed to reach climate neutrality through the supply chain by 2050.
Although there is a long way to go, we are proud of our progress made up to now in all identified areas of focus. Our sustainability journey has been full of learning opportunities and this motivates all our teams to relentlessly strive to achieve our targets within set timeframes.
As we usher in this new era of inclusive growth by respecting the environment, we hope to carry on our effort in fostering our partnership with our partners upstream and downstream in the textile value chain so that together, we achieve our mission to “accelerate our transition towards sustainable clothing.” In so doing, we will be leaving behind us a healthy planet for the generations to come.
